My family loves Hamburger Helper, the kind from the store in the red box, and are always extremely let down when I say I'm making my own hamburger helper - they ask "from a box" i say "no" they say "sigh". I don't really care for the stuff. I don't really like hamburger, but it is the only kind of beef I can cook well - and I use it a lot. I really am on the hunt for a good homemade version.
This one tonight wasn't it. I'm not posting a picture until I find a killer recipe that blows the socks off of everyone and they can't even tell that it didn't come from a box. Plus, we all know what elbow macaroni and hamburger looks like.
This is the original recipe that I found for it. But I didn't follow the recipe of course so these are the changes I made.
1 pound ground beef
2 cup hot water
2 cups milk
2 cups elbow macaroni
1 tablespoon corn starch
2 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt - I really just give a couple shakes
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon paprika
2 cup marble cheese, shredded
Brown meat, dump everything in except cheese, bring to a boil, then simmer on med heat till noodles are cooked. Add in cheese - save a little for sprinkling over the top when you serve it.
I really just upped the spices because it was really lacking, used 2% milk, and regular shredded marble cheese.
I will make this again, with the spices doubled like this, and see how it passes with the family. It wasn't a dud, just didn't impress anyone, but then again - no one really complained.
